Ninth and Navajo Mercy Housing Groundbreaking Ceremony
On March 20th, DLAA employee Emmy Stromer had the pleasure of attending the groundbreaking ceremony for the Mercy Housing development project at Ninth and Navajo in Denver.
Once completed, this project will offer the community 190 affordable homes and a health clinic for Indigenous residents. This space will provide services such as case management, primary healthcare, mental health support, and transportation passes ensuring the residents have full access to the resources they need.
The event began with an explanation of traditions of caring for Mother Earth and uplifting one’s community, highlighting the impact of projects like these in addressing Denver’s housing crisis. Following this was a stunning performance of various Indigenous dances and a land blessing honoring the job site’s cultural and spiritual significance as construction begins.
Governor Jared Polis spoke remarking on his commitment to expanding access to affordable housing. He highlighted the purposeful proximity to public transit offering its residents convenient access. Reinforcing his plans to create a reality where Coloradans can have better access to affordable housing near job opportunities and essential services.
Other impactful speakers such as Shelly Marquez, president of Mercy Housing Mountain Plains, spoke of the project and donor team dedication that made his project a reality. Along with reflecting on the impacts this space will have on low-income families, seniors, and individuals with special needs.
